Common Hyundai issues we see
Every brand has its known quirks. After years of working on Hyundai platforms across the Raleigh Triangle, here's what we look at first — not a list of certainties, just the spots that tend to need attention.
- Theta II 2.0T / 2.4 GDI (Sonata, Santa Fe, Tucson, ~2011–2019): well-documented engine concerns covered under prior recalls — we check service history and listen for rod knock
- Lambda II 3.3 / 3.8 V6 (Genesis, G80, G90, Palisade, Telluride): generally robust — we check oil consumption pattern and timing chain behavior
- GDI carbon buildup across the lineup: an intake cleaning interval that often gets skipped
- 8-speed automatic / 7-speed DCT: real fluid service interval — neglected fluid is the most common cause of early shift complaints
- Hybrid battery (Sonata, Ioniq, Tucson Hybrid): we can pull battery state-of-health data and individual cell voltages
- BlueLink / infotainment generation: affects CarPlay and update path
