Common Subaru issues we see
Every brand has its known quirks. After years of working on Subaru platforms across the Raleigh Triangle, here's what we look at first — not a list of certainties, just the spots that tend to need attention.
- EJ25 boxer (older Forester, Outback, Legacy, Impreza): head gasket condition is the well-known concern — we check coolant condition, listen at cold start, and review service history
- FB25 boxer (~2011–2018): oil consumption pattern on early units — we can document the rate before you commit to a repair
- FA20 turbo (WRX): ringland and rod-bearing concerns on early units, especially on tuned cars — we check service history and listen carefully
- CVT (most modern Subarus): real fluid service interval — neglected CVT fluid is the most common cause of judder and early failure
- Wheel bearings: a known wear item across the lineup — we check play and listen at speed
- EyeSight / Starlink: camera alignment and software updates after windshield replacement or front-end work
