What we do in your driveway

A real list, not a bait-and-switch one:

  • Transmission fluid and filter service (ATF, CVT, DSG / dual-clutch on most platforms)
  • Transmission leak diagnosis and pan / gasket replacement
  • Mount replacement (engine and transmission mounts) — common cause of clunks mistaken for transmission failure
  • Range / neutral safety sensor and shift-solenoid replacement on accessible platforms
  • Linkage and shifter cable adjustment
  • Scan-tool diagnostics — live data, adaptive learning, fault history across powertrain modules

When a transmission shop is the right call

We don't do this work in driveways and won't pretend to — these jobs need a lift, a hoist, and shop infrastructure:

  • Full transmission rebuilds or replacements
  • Internal valve-body teardown
  • Torque converter replacement on most platforms
  • Hard-parts work (planetary gears, shafts, clutch packs)

Why a diagnostic comes first

Symptoms that look like transmission failure often aren't. We've found bad engine mounts mistaken for slipping, low fluid masquerading as torque-converter failure, and crank-sensor faults reported as 'transmission problem' by parts-store readers. A real diagnostic usually saves several hundred dollars in mis-diagnosis before you commit to a rebuild quote.

We use scan tools that read transmission-specific data: line pressure, gear-ratio errors, slip percentage, adaptive learning values. That's the difference between a code and a diagnosis.

Fluid service — the most common honest fix

A surprising amount of transmission complaints — judder, harsh shifts, slow engagement — come down to old, oxidized fluid. Many manufacturers call modern transmission fluid 'lifetime,' which in our experience means 'as long as the powertrain warranty.' Following the actual fluid-service interval (or doing it once on a high-mileage car that never had it) often resolves the symptom without a rebuild.

Drain-and-fill vs. full exchange depends on the platform — we'll tell you which one your transmission actually wants, not push the bigger ticket.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Can you rebuild my transmission in my driveway?
No — and anyone telling you they can is selling something they shouldn't. Internal transmission work needs a lift, clean shop conditions, and the right tooling. What we can do: an honest diagnostic, fluid service, leak repair, mount and sensor work, and a fair second opinion before you commit to a rebuild quote.
I got a quote for from a transmission shop — should I get a second opinion?
Yes, almost always. Transmission shops are in the business of rebuilds, which is a fair business — but a real diagnostic from a different tech sometimes finds a simpler cause like a mount, sensor, low fluid, or electrical fault before you approve major work.
What about CVT fluid service?
CVTs especially benefit from on-interval fluid service — the 'lifetime fluid' claim doesn't hold up in our experience, particularly on Nissan, Subaru, and Honda CVTs. We carry the correct CVT-specific fluids and follow each manufacturer's procedure (some require a specific drain-and-fill sequence, not a generic exchange).
DSG / dual-clutch transmission — can you service it?
Yes for most platforms (VW / Audi DSG, Porsche PDK, BMW DKG, Hyundai/Kia DCT). These transmissions have a real fluid-service interval despite some 'lifetime' marketing, and following it is one of the best things you can do for long-term reliability.
Where do you serve?
Raleigh, Durham, Cary, Chapel Hill, Apex, Wake Forest, Garner, Fuquay-Varina, Holly Springs, Clayton, Knightdale, Morrisville, Wendell, and Rolesville.
What's your warranty?
12 months or 12,000 miles on parts and labor — whichever comes first.
