Used Toyota Pre-Purchase Inspections

Toyotas (and Lexuses) are some of the most reliable used cars on the market — but specific years and platforms have specific problems. We know them, and we check every one at the seller's location.

Model-specific issues we specifically check

  • Tacoma & Tundra (2005–2010): frame rust — Toyota issued frame buyback/replacement programs; we check the frame condition and history
  • Tacoma 3.5 V6 (2016+): cold-start rattle, transmission tuning quirks, low-speed gear hunting
  • Tundra 5.7 V8: generally bulletproof — we check secondary air injection (cold-climate models), exhaust manifold leaks
  • 2AZ-FE 2.4L (Camry, RAV4, Scion tC ~2002–2009): oil consumption, head bolt thread failure — check oil level and look for prior head work
  • 2GR-FE 3.5 V6 (Camry, Avalon, RX350, Highlander): oil-line failure recall on early years — confirm completion
  • Prius & hybrid models: HV battery state-of-health scan, inverter coolant pump (Gen 2 Prius), brake actuator (Gen 3)
  • Lexus IS/GS/LS V8 (UZ-series): generally stellar — we check starter (buried under intake on some), VVT-i oil-line
  • 4Runner, GX, LX: KDSS (Kinetic Dynamic Suspension) leak check, frame condition, third-row seat condition

What else we cover on every Toyota PPI

  • Full 150-point inspection + OBD-II scan of every module
  • Frame and underbody check — Triangle cars rarely rust, but we still verify
  • Hybrid system: battery SOH, inverter coolant level, regenerative brake feel (where applicable)
  • Service history readout, oil condition, transmission fluid color & smell
  • Road test for transmission shifts, brake feel, alignment, suspension noises
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How do you test a Toyota hybrid battery?
We scan the hybrid system for battery state-of-health, module voltage balance, and any pending fault codes. A weak hybrid battery often shows in the data before the dashboard light comes on.
Is frame rust a real risk on older Tacomas/Tundras?
It was for trucks that lived in the salt belt. Triangle-area trucks are usually clean, but we still inspect the frame carefully and check whether any rust-related Toyota campaign was completed.
Do you have Toyota specialists?
Yes. Our techs are trained on Toyota platforms and bring brand-specific scan tools so we can read manufacturer codes a generic OBD-II reader can't. We know the common failure points by model year.
Can you inspect a Toyota at a dealership?
Absolutely. We routinely meet buyers at Toyota dealerships and independent sellers across the Raleigh Triangle. The seller doesn't need to be present.
