Belt-driven vs. timing-chain water pumps

If your water pump is driven by the serpentine belt (most Honda, Toyota, GM, Ford 4-cylinder, and many older engines), it's a straightforward 2–3 hour driveway job. We replace the pump, thermostat (cheap to do at the same time), and coolant.

If your water pump is driven by the timing chain or timing belt (most modern BMW, Mercedes, Audi/VW 2.0T, Mini, some Ford EcoBoost), the job is more involved — sometimes 4–8 hours and occasionally needs a shop. We'll tell you honestly which category your vehicle falls into before quoting.

What we replace at the same time

Anything held in by the same bolts and gaskets we already have open. Doing it now saves you a second labor charge in a year:

  • Thermostat and housing — they fail in pairs
  • Drive belt and tensioner if showing wear
  • Coolant — full drain, refill with OEM-spec, and proper bleed
  • Lower radiator hose if it's the original
Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my water pump is failing?
Three classic signs: (1) coolant weeping from a 'weep hole' under the pump or staining the timing cover, (2) a whining or growling noise from the front of the engine that changes with RPM, (3) overheating with no other obvious cause. We can confirm in a 30-minute visit with a borescope and a pressure test.
How much does mobile water pump replacement cost?
Water pump pricing depends entirely on whether your pump is belt-driven (a straightforward driveway job) or driven by the timing chain/belt (more involved). We confirm the price after looking at your specific engine. Firm written quote, no surprise add-ons.
Should I replace the timing belt at the same time?
Yes, if you have a timing-belt-driven pump (older Honda V6, older Audi, older Subaru). The labor to access them is identical, so doing both costs only the price of the timing belt kit — and resets your clock on both for another 90,000+ miles.
How long can I drive with a small water pump leak?
Days, not weeks. A small weep usually progresses to a full failure quickly, and a failed pump on the highway means overheating in 5 minutes — which can warp the head. If you see coolant near the front of the engine, get it looked at this week.
