Belt-driven vs. timing-chain water pumps
If your water pump is driven by the serpentine belt (most Honda, Toyota, GM, Ford 4-cylinder, and many older engines), it's a straightforward 2–3 hour driveway job. We replace the pump, thermostat (cheap to do at the same time), and coolant.
If your water pump is driven by the timing chain or timing belt (most modern BMW, Mercedes, Audi/VW 2.0T, Mini, some Ford EcoBoost), the job is more involved — sometimes 4–8 hours and occasionally needs a shop. We'll tell you honestly which category your vehicle falls into before quoting.
